Aerospace Engineering vs Science Fiction Imagination:  what if aerospace engineers were part of the writing team or the conceptualization of science fiction movies and TV entertainment? How much different would it look like?

Gerald Blackburn is an engineer and was a Project Manager with the Boeing Space and Communications Corporation. He was responsible for directing the Advanced Standards and Practices efforts in the Systems Safety and Product Assurance Department at the Huntington Beach Facility. Mr. Blackburn has been in the Aerospace Industry for over 40 years and retired in 2003. His career has spanned the entire manned space program from the X-15 at North American Aviation to the Apollo, Saturn SII, Space Shuttle and International Space Station Programs.

 

During his career on Apollo he worked in quality assurance and as a materials engineer. Thirty-five years were spent at the Downey North American/NASA site the home of the Apollo and Space Shuttle spacecrafts.

Mr. Blackburn has a MBA from Pepperdine University and is a native Californian. He enjoys spending time with his seven grandchildren and traveling with his wife Kathy.  Mr. Blackburn is founder and CEO of Tinkers Corner LLC a STEM education resource company. He is a member of the advisory Board of Directors for the City of Downey Columbia Memorial Space Center. He is a Past President of the Aerospace Legacy Foundation  here in California developing historical preservation and outreach projects.

Tim Cassidy-Curtis is an aspiring writer when not doing his day job (a job that involves things like rockets and space...gee, who'd want to give that up to be a writer?). Tim has been featured in the Quantum Visions Chapter Book and NOVA, The Magazine of Science Fiction. During his rapidly dwindling off-time, Tim is also member of the Aerospace Legacy Foundation Board.

Shawn Crosby Artist/actor has worked as an artist for Griffith Observatory, propbuilder for Star Trek, toy designer for Mattel and Playmates, modelmaker for Disney and videogame designer for Vivendi/Universal. A founding member of Enigma Players Improv and Lux Theater fan-oriented performance groups, he is currently mouthing-off as host on Scifi.Radio and in the field of voice-acting, and most recently set science-fiction fandom back 30 years with appearances as himself on ABC's 1980s- and 1990s-something sitcoms "The Goldbergs" and "Schooled." In his alter-ego as semi-professional Jedi Knight “Obi-Shawn,” Star Wars geek and owner of the "H-Wing" and "Z-Wing" art cars, Shawn has traveled to the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, NBA All-Star game, Skywalker Ranch, Johnson Space Center and other interesting locations teaching science, the path of the Jedi and lightsaber techniques to kids and kids-at-heart. Matthew Monahan has been Treasurer since 2019

He has been a lifelong resident of Los Angeles county and has had a lifelong interest in aerospace and its history. Doing his own research, he has in recent years joined the Aerospace Legacy Foundation as outreach chairman and has given talks on space programs at the last two OuteRimCon conventions as well as the last international space development conference.
